Internships - Paid Or Unpaid, Does it Really Matter?

By : Ben Mcneil

Most colleges and universities require students to complete an internship in their chosen field. Even if they are not required, internships are a great way to gain experience and make important networking connections. The important question is whether or not it makes a difference whether a student takes a paid internship or an unpaid internship.

Many college students are lucky enough to be without real financial obligations. They live with their parents when they are not at school and their parents help them out by paying for their cell phone, car and other expenses. In this case, it really does not matter if the student is paid for their internship or not. They can focus only on finding the opportunity where they will learn the most.

Unfortunately, some students are at the opposite end of the spectrum and cannot afford to go without a paycheck for the term of their internship. In this situation, they need to try to find an internship that is paid so that they can pay the bills while completing their scholastic obligations. These positions can be slightly harder to find but, for a qualified applicant, they are not impossible.

If a student cannot afford to take an unpaid internship position and cannot find a paid position, they may need to compromise. At this point, it is a good idea to explore options for part time internships. This allows the student to complete their internship on a part time basis while still having a part time job to pay the bills during that time.

It is necessary for all students to understand the importance an internship and the positive impact it can have not only on their education but on their career. Some students may not like the idea of moving home for the summer and taking an unpaid position but that is not the same as truly not being able to do it. If there is any possible way that a student can take an internship, whether it is paid or not, they should do whatever they need to do to make it happen.

When it comes to internships, it would be great if every student could get a paid position but that is simply not realistic. If a student can afford to take some time off of working to do an unpaid internship, they should do that. Students who do not have that luxury should search for paid internships or consider a part-time unpaid internship that allows them to still work. The one thing that no student should ever do is forgo the experience of an internship in their field of study.
