A job search can be a very time-consuming thing. But in this economy, it may take longer to get that good job, the one to move you along in your career or even the one that will really pay your bills. If you want to increase your chances of getting the job you want or need, you must be willing to wait for the right opportunity. Here are a few things that you can do to keep yourself afloat or find new opportunities so that you do not have to make that desperation move of taking the first offer that comes along.
1. Get in touch with your contacts and see if any of them need help with any projects. Ask for specific types of work: “I am available for any marketing projects that come along; I can do project management, copywriting and production work.” Send along a resume that will give them the full story. Don’t be afraid of acing yourself out of something you don’t mention. It is better to be specific than just saying, “Do you have any projects I could help you with?”
2. Don’t be shy; be sure to post on your social network profiles that you are available for project work while you are looking for another position. Depending on your field, this could be very lucrative. Also read Are You Too Shy to Find a Job? How to Deal with Shyness during Job Search
3. Schedule informational interviews with people you meet at networking events. Don’t be pushy about project work or needing a job – just ask if you can have 15 minutes of their time to find out more about what they do or what types of projects they might need help with.
4. Take a class in something very relevant to your industry or chosen career path – you may even make contacts there that will be handy later. Don’t specifically try to network here – just rely on organic connections with people you feel comfortable with. Use good class projects in your portfolio.
5. Offer to teach or present to groups if you have expertise in a certain area. Fraternal organizations (like VFW, Lions, etc), professional groups or community education programs are always looking for instructors. You may be able to earn anywhere from a $50 honorarium for a lunch talk to over $100 for a Saturday morning workshop. This does not have to be a professional topic either! Dust off that hobby you never had time for when you were working full time. Also read Training Classes That Will Help You to Find a Job
The more specific you can be in your search for project work, the better. Think about the skills you have that are really marketable. Think about what audience could use those skills. The items above may bring you in contact with people that you otherwise would not have met, and give you the opportunity to talk to them while not explicitly looking for a job. It will give you a feeling of accomplishment and help you with that all-important task of maintaining a good attitude.
