Making It Count - 3 Tips to Taking Time Off

By : Ricky I K Ruto

It seems that wherever we look people are in a hurry to do something. Hurrying to work, at work hurrying to get work done, at lunch hurrying to eat, hurrying home after work to get to the kids, the list is endless.

With all this rushing about people barely get time to simply sit and relax. When they do it seems that even at rest their minds are still fixated on getting things done.

Though this might seem like some kind of efficient method of working it actually just burns people out.

If You are in a profession where it is a must that You have to work for extended periods of time it is important to make sure that Your down time is literally 'time off'. No thoughts of work. No planning for the next day. Just time to rest, relax and regroup.

Here are a few tips that I've found useful when taking time off.

1. Turn Off The Phone.

If Your phone calls are usually business or work related then when You're at dinner or relaxing quite simply turn it off. When it's on there is always a part of Your mind being devoted to asking the question 'is it going to ring?' or even worse 'is it ringing right now?!' With these voices sounding off in Your head relaxation becomes near impossible so just switch it off. Whoever needs to reach You will still be able to reach You in an hour and since they've already left a message then they've already said what they need to say.

2. Go Somewhere Familiar.

If on Your time off You like to go to restaurants then heading to a 'local' that You usually go to is a wonderful way to relax. This is because the staff are familiar, You already know what You're going to order and it feels like 'coming home'. Going to new restaurant is always fun but usually entails a lot of thinking. This is due to having to take in the new surroundings, read over the new menu asking 'what's good?', learning new waiters or waitresses names and a whole host of other things.

On days off just play it safe.

3. Get Out of Town.

If You work in the city then a wonderful thing to do on a break is to take a drive out of the city. Put some relaxing music in the player and just cruise. Checking if there are any parks or restaurants that aren't too far away would be nice as well. Taking time to just 'get away from it all' always helps.

Lastly everyday as best as You can try to take an hour just to look at things You enjoy, listen to music You love or spend time with someone who brightens up Your day.

It's true that at work We should do the best We can but after that We should try and do the best for Us as well.

Thank You for reading and have a marvelous day.
