Acceptable Use Policies

by englisharticle. info

School policies frequently include guidelines designed to create boundaries and barriers that promote safety when accessing Internet resources. Structuring a safe environment involves a declaration of rules, policies, and procedures that clearly communicate that the school will not support behavior that places children at risk. The acceptable use policy typically outlines expectations for behavior and consequences for infringement of the privilege to use computer resources. The signature of a child and parent denotes an understanding and acceptance of the school policies for Internet access and use.

Access Control Software

by englisharticle. info

The arduous task of safeguarding children in cyberspace has resulted in the development of filtering and blocking tools. These tools include access control features available through the Internet service provider, websites geared toward children’s safe surfing and online interaction, and software that blocks, filters, and/or monitors objectionable content. In classroom settings, tools can integrate chunks of websites into a page accessible to students without going online. Whereas child-friendly sites provide a contained environment that features fun and educational activities, software may guide children’s online exploration with control access. These applications screen sites when a user attempts to gain access and uses researched lists to evaluate the location with a predetermined database of approved and blocked sites. Pre-established lists of blocked areas may be overridden to allow greater access or to restrict online exploration. Some software also provides features that prevent children from divulging personal information, such as their name, age, address, phone number, or school name, to online acquaintances through websites and chat rooms.
Users can establish a log of all sites accessed, programs used, and words and phrases typed or received. Similarly, many Internet providers and online services offer site blocking, restrictions on incoming e-mail, and children’s accounts that access specific services.

The most apparent weakness of these devices is the ability of a child to disable the tool or circumvent its control. Additional limitations occur when some illicit sites are overlooked and remain accessible or when valid sites are blocked for spurious or unknown reasons. A combination of guidelines for children’s use of the Internet and adult supervision are necessary supplements to protective software. Restrictions to appropriate content are only one component of a vigilant process for protecting children.

Legislation

by englishArticle. info

Applicable legislation has not been able to keep pace with technological developments, and the constitutionality of many legal solutions has been challenged. Nonetheless, many states have crafted statutes that address child pornography and computers. Federal and state law also has evolved to ban computers as a means of soliciting children for sexual activity, and the proposal of additional legislation may lead to future statutes designed to safeguard youth. Recently, infringements of children’s privacy online resulted in the passage of COPPA, which focuses on commercial websites and the protection of children age twelve and under. The legislation requires active parental consent prior to the collection of personal information from children under age thirteen. Websites are allowed to respond to children’s requests for information via e-mail without parental involvement as long as the information is used for no other purposes than the child’s specific request. COPPA signals a trend toward federal efforts to ensure privacy in the interactive medium of the Internet.

Internet Addiction

by englishArticle. info

The merits of the Internet for young people engaged in research and educational exploration are vast; however, these benefits can be overshadowed when individuals become preoccupied with online use. Adolescents may be enticed by the allure of cyberspace and may replace homework, social activities, and other important interests with online relationships and interactive games. Subsequently, excessive Internet use may contribute to a student’s failure to attend to school assignments. Poor school performance may be exacerbated by sleep deprivation when sleeping hours are eroded by time spent on the Internet. Excessive users of the Internet may avoid emotional attachments with family and friends in the community and rely on online friendships as a substitute for social interaction. Other activities and interests may decline as a child becomes further obsessed with computer activities.

E-Commerce

by EnglishArticles .info

Since young people are a large consumer base, e-commerce has specifically targeted adolescents and children. These age groups are especially susceptible to manipulative marketing techniques with offers of prizes, games, and products. Children’s privacy is compromised through marketing and advertising practices that solicit detailed personal information and track online computer use. The development of personal profiles for young people enables marketers to design individualized messages and ads.

Avoid the Advice: Trust Yourself to Make the Best Decisions

By Angela Gonzalez

Over the course of your life, you probably have received an enormous amount of advice and much of it unsolicited. Even worse is the paradoxical advice, "an unexamined life is not worth living" or "too much information is a dangerous thing." Life is full of these experiences; you get advice from the latest bestselling author, your mother, your friend, etc. With this advice come expectations, and often, demands on how you should live, work, think and feel. With all this input, how do you best decide what's right for your life?

Step One - Recognize that the opinions and advice of others-is merely information for making your own decisions. For some people, that fact is understood and they don't worry about what others think or feel-so they charge ahead. Then there are the rest of us, who do care and it can be difficult to ignore the well-meaning advice from those that we respect, fear or love. The essential thing is to remember is that while others love to give advice--it's not their life--it's yours. Accepting this requires clear thought; a mindset that cuts through the competing voices so that you can listen to your own.

Step Two - Know that you have within you everything you need to make the best decision for yourself. It starts with an integrated approach. Examine the options through your three centers of intelligence: Head, Heart and Gut, with each center furnishing you with unique perspectives. Using this approach enables you to access to every bit of knowledge, experience and talent that you possess.

Think of a decision you want to make, big or small, and ask yourself the following questions. Write down your initial thoughts; don't ponder too long on any one question, and note the different perspectives when you are finished:

* Head (Intellect/Rational) - What does the logical and analytical part of me think? Do I have enough facts, data, history, analysis, details or examples? What do I think after sifting through the information? How will this help the situation? How can I use these conclusions in conjunction with my Heart and Gut?
* Heart (Feelings/Emotions) - What emotions am I feeling, what does my heart say? Do I feel scared, exhilarated, worried, sad or happy? Why do I feel this way? How does knowing how I feel help me make a better decision? How can I use these conclusions in conjunction with my Head and Gut?
* Gut (Intuition/Wisdom) - What does my intuition or gut sense; what do my instincts say? Do I sense the situation, idea or the person is right, wrong, dangerous or unclear? Why might I be having this instinctual reaction? What does this information tell me about what I need or should do? How can I use these conclusions in conjunction with my Head and Heart?

Step Three - Gain clarity; create a space to inspect and reflect on your choices before you take action. This interrupts your brain from its predictable drive for using the same old patterns for quick and comfortable decision-making. Instead reflect on the varied but connected answers from your three center of intelligence. While the answers may be different for each center, combined they serve 100% of your needs for making good choices. This enables you to fully articulate what you are experiencing within you and around you, and to synthesize what you find. Consider Ken, one of my coaching clients:

Ken was having trouble accessing his Gut and Heart perspectives in decision-making. He learned that his pattern was to make decisions only with his Head because that's what was rewarded in his family and work life; using logical and rational thought became his favorite criteria for making decisions. This meant that he learned to ignore his intuition that something was wrong or there was a different way to accomplish something, and he learned to stuff his emotions so far down that he didn't know what he was feeling or how he affected others. Ken has since learned that using all three intelligences gave him access to his intuition so he can rely on what he senses (from his Gut) and he is able to extend empathy and compassion to himself and others (from his Heart), in addition to using his exceptional rational thought.

Making your own decisions is very empowering. Your three centers of intelligence provide access to the wisdom that you possess. Having this information enables you to articulate why you are going to do what you do-with your eyes wide open. If it doesn't work out, you have the experience of what to do the next time, and you can learn and grow into how you want to be. Having access to your three centers of intelligence deepens your self-knowledge and expands your decision-making comfort zone. It helps you uncover your essential self and to feel strong in the face of opposition, expectations and the demands of others when you need to make a decision that is a good one for you, AND that is the one that you can trust.

Things Bad Leaders Do

By George Veronis

"Lots of folks confuse bad management with destiny."
- Kin Hubbard

A leader's job is not an easy one. He has to be the boss, the friend, the colleague, the confidante and the man who is the grease between the employees and the company. Good leaders can make a company not just successful but also a joy to work in, whereas bad leaders can turn the workplace into a simmering pot of discontent.

However, bad leaders often don't even realize they are being bad leaders. It's the mistakes they make in handling people that have stronger repercussions than they can imagine. Here are some of the things certain leaders do, or fail to do that make them so bad at their job:-

Cannot handle change: - Change is constant, and doubly so in business. If a leader cannot handle change himself, then it becomes extremely difficult for those under him to adapt. Guiding the team through a period of transition is something every leader should be able to do.

Blames it on the team: - Dragging out team members and putting them under the spotlight before the higher-ups is something most bad leaders do. It may save his skin in the short term, but it breeds resentment and disrespect and the leader earns a reputation of being unable to keep his people in line. Of course, mistakes by team members need to be addressed, but privately.

Takes credit for the work of others: - Most leaders who are in the habit of blaming the team for the mistakes also jump to pat themselves on the back in case of a job well done by a team member. This is just as bad, if not worse. Since the leader is most often the representative of the team before the top management, he has to represent his people fairly. This kind of behavior demotivates people and prevents them from giving their best.

Cannot take decisions: - Bad leaders cannot take decisions because they are afraid of owning up to the consequences of their actions. Where a good leader is dynamic and decisive, a bad leader will constantly defer the decision making process, hoping time will take care of the problem or will look for someone to blame.

Easily swayed by fawning and flattery: - A good leader trusts the performers. A bad leader trusts the talkers. Unfortunately, talk is cheap, and sucking up is how the inefficient employees try to get ahead. Bad leaders have a select group of favorites who are almost exclusively the worst workers, and will try to cover up the mistakes of this group, with disastrous results.

Cannot communicate: - Communicating with team members is an art in itself, and involves walking a fine line between leniency and firmness. Even the most efficient person will never be successful as a leader if he is rude or brisk with his people all the time. And the same goes for those who cannot tell someone off when it is necessary.

Leadership Is a Process

By Gbitse Barrow

Do you have a boss, supervisor, manager or CEO who doesn't meet your expectations as a leader? Are you concerned that your new boss or manager doesn't have the right attitude, knowledge, skills and behaviour to lead, or are you worried that despite many years in a position of leadership, your boss continues to fall short of everyone's expectations? These are real life scenarios that play out each day in our workplaces, businesses and communities. Even on a larger scale in society, how satisfied are we of our civil and political leaders and their abilities to lead us effectively and towards success?

If you are dealing with a leader similar to the ones described above, or you suspect that you may be indeed that positional leader who is falling short of the expectation, one of the most important lessons you must learn about leadership is that it is a process, and not an event. Leaders grow each day, and leadership is in itself a journey. The mere fact that you have won an election, started a new business, married a wife, gotten a promotion, or arrived at a position of leadership doesn't make you a leader. Authentic leadership is about a life-long commitment to learning and transformational change, which is required for you to create the positive influence and success required of you as a leader.

Some of the challenges we have with ourselves as leaders, as well as with our positional leaders is because we haven't recognized and understood that Leadership is a process and a journey. Through this journey of leadership leaders need to grow and become more aware of themselves by reflecting, asking questions, and getting feedback from the people they lead. The new learnings from this process will enable them adopt different styles and approaches and engage their followers more effectively. A lot of leaders jettison this process, and believe that having arrived at their positions they would all of a sudden achieve a "god-status", and that all the powers and successes that "leaders" have will suddenly become theirs.

A great example of what I am describing can best be seen when a new leader is promoted from within the team. How can you be so myopic to believe that from the first day you will gain everyone's respect or buy-in; how can you fit into the shoes of the previous leader so quickly; how can you heal all the wounds of the past and move forward? Honestly, these things take time, which if you do not apply yourself to as a systematic process, may indeed take forever, or actually never happen. A lot of new leaders who were great team members and performers fail to recognize this and fail woefully in their first leadership assignments. I have seen people fall into this trap, and struggle to retrace their steps quickly enough and learn the competencies required to be leaders. Some of them escape, wobble and fumble along to higher positions of leadership, but carry with them forever, the scars of their leadership events, rather than the learnings and changes required of a leadership journey.

Look around today, and think about those examples of positional leaders who are not effective leaders, there is perhaps a lesson or two that can be learned from their first leadership events or positions. As you look at newly appointed or elected leaders who seem not to have what it takes - do endeavor to give them a chance and support them through their journeys. If they are committed to life-long learning and transformational learning like all great leaders should be, then their journey to leadership, although challenging will be blessed with success in the long-run.

As we look around us, we must also look at ourselves, and ask the pertinent questions - How have I dealt with my past and current leadership positions? Is leadership just an event, or am I in a committed systematic process of growing each day as a leader? Whatever your answers may be, just remember that you can re-trace your steps and create a real leadership journey as you continue to grow as leader. Focus on continuous learning, feedback and a willingness to change, and be committed, deliberate and systematic about it!

How to Attain Effective Leadership Styles

By Chris D Cruz

Being an effective leader is paramount to affect goal oriented results, any leader will confide that leadership styles perform best when they originate and are affected from a tight bond with the people being led. Having good leadership styles connotes being able to be a visionary; has target goals to what you wish you and your people to achieve. For any leader to have such an effect then a strong mind is needed to initiate such positive thoughts towards the desired goal.

It is very important for a leader to spend most of his time visualizing on how to lead his people, as earlier mentioned the mind is very important in attaining leadership acts, the mental wellness of an individual influences their thoughts which in turn replicates on their action and lifestyle. Research has it that people tend to learn more or actually scrutinize a leader through their action; a well characterized leader is bond to have a good following than a leader who speaks empty words.

For any leader to flourish in his leadership acts then the power of law of attraction must be known to him. There are quite a number of things one can achieve through the power of the mind. You don't need external forms of therapy to affect the change you need as positive affirmation towards a goal can help you attain the result you desire. Many people have affected different acts of law of attraction to their benefits, however it is very important to understand that result does not happen overnight and one needs consistency for desired results to materialize.

It is very imperative to understand the functions of the mind should you be interested in mind exercises. The brain is a complex organ which is in charge of each and every human activity. The brain is divided into two parts; namely the right and the left hemisphere, each part of the brain is charged to perform different tasks which are beneficial to any activity in the body. These functions of the brain brings alive the intangible state of the brain which is called the mind. The mind exist in two states, the conscious and the subconscious mind, the conscious state of the mind is often referred to as the aware state of the mind while the subconscious state of the mind referred to as the concealed mind state. The functions of these states of the mind are mutual and none can perform without the other. The conscious states are charged with reasoning whereas the subconscious state of the mind is charged with growth and development.

Anyone interested in gaining good leadership styles should perform visualization acts which are beneficial in attaining subconscious mind learning. The result of targeted subconscious mind learning is success to the specific targeted goal. Positive affirmation play a great role in affecting visualization acts, one should always learn to think positively for this elongates relevant mind development acts. A good leader should also be able to teach his followers on how to attain success through law of attraction.

Effective Mind Training Leadership Acts

By Chris D Cruz

There is a famous saying that quotes 'great leaders are never born but are made' skeptics with limited knowledge about the power of the mind can shrug off this saying; however its proven beyond reasonable doubts that some of the great leaders we normally refer to were unable to perform basic leadership qualities such as oratory. While such didn't deter them from achieving there goals something must have propelled them to such heights of success. Most of these success stories prove the power of the mind. Well, there is no limit to what a developed mind can do; there are a number of research that proves positive laws of attraction effects on training leadership acts.

It is very important to understand that people are exposed to effects of laws of attraction whether they affect them knowingly or unknowingly. The surroundings in which one finds himself in has major roles to play in developing that person's behavior. For instance; if one spends most of their time in settings which are negative to success that individual will never experience success at anytime in their lives.

Mind developments are essential in creating relevant thought setups which are beneficial in attaining targeted goal. For example; an individual can elongate leadership qualities by visualization acts. Mental visualization is imperative to attain goals of any nature; when an individual inclines their minds to affect mental pictures of what they desire to become what follows from this are relevant thought setup catapulted to that goal. Any successful leader confides in the power of the mind in affecting envisioned results. Quite a number of people have written topics and books about how one can affect success by training their minds to affect such success.

When training leadership acts, it is very important to understand that results do not show up overnight; one has to be keen and consistent in creating positive thoughts and also acting upon them. Action and positive affirmation go hand in hand; one can never attain great leadership styles if they fail to act upon what they believe. One effective way of affecting fast results is creating relevant familiar thoughts in the mind; most people tend to do such by reading informational success stories.

Once you create a familiar ground in the mind then believing and hoping for the best out of what you envisage is always possible. It is very important to understand for laws of attraction force to take effect then positive thoughts towards a result should be part and parcel of that individual's lifestyle. In order to create an aura that attracts success in what you believe then one may even be forced to talk to their inner being; this are called positive verbal affirmation. By doing this an individual confirms what they believe to their subconscious mind which in turns creates a learning subconscious process which is effective in delivering desired results.

For any one to be a great leader, training leadership acts through the power of the mind are a perfect way of achieving the unthinkable. Leaders who teach their followers how to use laws of attraction to affect change in their lives lead a group of great people.

How To Feel Better About Yourself in 24 Hours

By Patrick Edwards

How are you feeling today? Would you like to feel better tomorrow? If so, here's some good news: You can feel great in just 24 hours by making small changes in your diet and lifestyle.

These changes don't require you to do anything extraordinary. In fact, these are the little rules that we know we need to live by for optimal health and happiness, but which get shoved aside by our daily routines.

Try them out for a day, and feel the difference!

Start Your Day Off Right

Look at your usual breakfast choices. Could they be healthier? Do you skip breakfast in an effort to save calories, or because you don't like to eat first thing in the morning?

Your breakfast kicks off your metabolism for the day. If you run on empty all morning, your metabolism will slow to a crawl. You'll also find yourself starving by lunchtime, making it more likely that you'll overeat.

Give your morning a healthy start by preparing a nutritious breakfast of turkey bacon, eggs, and fresh strawberries.

If you'd prefer something more portable, mix up a smoothie using silken tofu and various fruits.

If you're a light eater in the morning, at least have some peanut butter on whole grain toast.

The important thing is to get a dose of nutrition to get your metabolism in gear and make you feel better all day long.

Stretch and Relax

Mornings are a great time to stretch your muscles and prepare yourself to deal with the stress you will encounter during the day.

You can do stretching and relaxation exercises before you get out of bed, or after you eat breakfast.

Sit down in lotus position and gently stretch your arms, hips, and back. Do head and shoulder rolls to relieve any tension that built up overnight. Then straighten your legs and stretch them one at a time.

Return to lotus position and close your eyes. Feel your stress draining away along with the muscle tension. Breathe deeply, and hold each breath for a count of five.

Do this for five minutes while you visualize the tasks you would like to achieve that day.

Get Hydrated

Once you're ready to head out the door, grab some drinking water to take with you. Most of us go through our days in a state of mild dehydration. Medications and health conditions can make dehydration even worse.

Be sure to drink at least 64 ounces of water. It's best to drink throughout the day, perhaps sipping on a 32 ounce cup of water all morning, then refilling it at lunch and drinking the rest over the course of your afternoon.

You might find that you need to make more trips to the bathroom, but that's a sign of proper hydration. It means your body is letting go of retained fluid and flushing itself clean.

Get Energized

Snacking is an important way to keep your energy level high. Look for snacks that pack a lot of nutrition into a handful of calories.

Almonds are an excellent choice because they contain protein, healthy fat, and healthy carbs. Low-fat cheese or yogurt is another good choice. Raw fruits and vegetables give you plenty of vitamins and minerals for a low calorie cost.

Try to eat a snack every two hours to keep your blood sugar stable. This will prevent cravings and help you feel full until your next meal.

Have a Slow, Healthy Dinner

By dinner time, you've put in a full day. You might be feeling tired or emotionally exhausted. Instead of binging on comfort foods, give yourself a variety of tasty but nutritious foods that will keep you feeling good all evening.

Serve up some lean protein like roasted chicken or lean ground sirloin. Add a colorful side salad filled with your favorite seeds and veggies, and have a cup of whole grain pasta on the side.

Be sure to skip the alcohol and caffeine with dinner; both can interfere with the quality of your sleep.

Go for a Walk

A little after-dinner activity can help you calm your mind and loosen your muscles. Exercise also helps you sleep better at night, and good sleep is a vital part of feeling great tomorrow.

Since you're just starting out, your goal should be to get 30 minutes of cardio activity.

If you're not accustomed to exercise, take it easy with a walk around your neighborhood or a nearby park. If the weather's bad, stay home and dance around to your favorite music.

Get a Good Night's Sleep

Now that you've exercised, hydrated yourself throughout the day, and avoided late doses of caffeine and alcohol, you're all set to have a good night's sleep. A little more stretching and relaxation can help clear your mind of racing thoughts.

If noise or light interfere with your sleep, invest in some inexpensive ear plugs and a sleep mask. These might feel a little awkward at first, but the deep sleep they bring is well worth it.

Also, give yourself enough time to get a full night's sleep. Most of us require between 8 and 10 hours a night. If you've been operating on significantly less, you might be surprised by how refreshed you can feel with just a little extra sleep.

Selling Yourself on Self-Confidence

By Travis Giauque

Remember that new idea that slid across the canvas of your mind not too long ago? Where did it go? What did you do with it? I believe images like those happen to thousands of people everyday. However, the reaction to such thoughts and ideas can differ drastically. Some recognize it and act on it. Some recognize it and dismiss it as impractical. And some recognize it but don't know how to move on it. Why doesn't the last person know what to do with it? They most likely believe in the new idea, can see how great of an idea it can be, but freeze when it comes to moving forward.

Often times the response of an individual may be, "I don't know how to do that". Or they sell themselves short by stating, "I wouldn't know what to do if... ", and fill in the ending with some problem or dilemma that would need to be solved, even though such a problem doesn't currently exist in the moment. Why might an individual think this way? This type of thought process indicates a lack of Self-confidence. Once you believe that you can overcome whatever is placed in front of you, or accomplish any great achievement, or create any great successful product or company; you will be successful! You need to recognize the power you have within you.

You are a supreme creation. You have every capability currently within yourself to accomplish any, and all, of your dreams. You are not perfect, but it's important to note that this fact only aids to your advantage. Recognizing that you have flaws and hurdles to overcome makes you more humble. Humility leads one to know that they can't rely solely upon the efforts of themselves. You will achieve all that you desire when you know that you don't need to know everything. All you need to do is believe and do what you can. Everything you need to succeed is all around you right now. And what you don't currently have, you don't currently need, but it will be brought to you as the need arises.

To incubate self-confidence in your mind, one needs to know that it is possible to achieve perfection without being perfect. In other words, you have to believe that you can create an overwhelmingly successful company despite imperfections. The solution to any dilemma, if it ever becomes real, will present itself when needed as you seek for it. Essentially you need to sell yourself on self-confidence.

Does the thought of the word "selling" create feelings of anxiety within you? Does the thought of having to sell anything make you uneasy? Don't worry about it. Think for a minute about your selling situation. You are selling to nobody else but yourself and you already now that your "client" wants to buy. You will succeed.

Here is a step that I have been taught that assists in your personal growth in clearing your self-confidence hurdles. It is what I call a "Power Phrase". A power phrase is a one-lined sentence that you generate specifically to your difficulty. It may be for an instant opportunity or for a long-term opportunity. It may apply to attaining one's desired weight, or self-perception, or personal interaction with others. It can be for any aspect in your life that you desire to improve. It needs to start with "I am", or "I will" - a powerful and commanding beginning that indicates surety. It then describes the item you desire to overcome in a positive frame of mind. And lastly, which is very important, it ends with the words "thank you" - repeated three times.

For example, if I wanted to be confident in my ability to be more patient with my children, I might form a Power Phrase like this: "I will be happily patient today with my children. Thank you, thank you, thank you." Once the phrase has been personally defined, it needs to be repeated out loud at the beginning of each day. It also should be repeated at every moment that a doubt intrudes your thoughts, attempting to discourage and undermine your confidence in moving forward.

As you define and implement the Power Phrase tool, you will begin to notice a change in your thoughts, behaviors, and actions. You are actually changing your subconscious beliefs that hinder you from achieving that new idea that first came into your mind. Recognize this and know that your self-confidence has increased. Remember, you have nothing to lose at selling yourself on self-confidence. Define your power phrase, apply it consistently, and you will see the results as defined in your phrase. More importantly, you will see a more confident you.

Having Pleasure Without Guilt

By John Kenneth

The road to self-improvement can be a bit difficult and if not geared well the action of poor self-image can always perpetuate itself. Therefore being strong-willed is the way forward as to ward-off the tendency of keeping replaying the old patterns of blame, guilt and self denigration. These three behaviour traits can be overcome by speaking well of yourself as well as treating your body well, because everything we do affects everything else and besides it is the only one body you have got, so give it some nourishment and exercise it well.

It is good to learn to praise yourself each time you accomplish or do something right as it is good to acknowledge your valve and perhaps go an extra mile and give yourself a pat on the back. The other behaviour traits such as comparison of yourself with others, non-acceptance of compliments and also starving ourselves of luxuries unnecessarily can lead to constant poor health, therefore try to be on the positive side and accept compliments and on the other hand also give compliments too, and when given a compliment, as obvious it is good to say, "thank you," or words to effect that.

When it comes to giving compliments, well it is good to recognise the beauty of others and it is one of the easiest ways to feel good about yourself. Another important thing to do is get yourself around people and also work on having pleasure without guilt. This way you can be much happy about yourself and be that kind of person you ever wanted to be.

Depression and Procrastination - The Terrible Duo Challenge

By Odessa Flores-Lemence

Virtually, people have at least dawdled with the procrastination process. Some even made it a way of life. Depression and procrastination appear to be a bothering phenomenon. The link between the two is connected and the lack of action simply correlates with one another.

In a broader view, procrastination and depression has been associated to several organizational and societal issues. Procrastinating is an inertial process where one subsequently do what one has done before and continues the pattern. Unless having the motivation to break from it, procrastination will devour ones self and eventually lead to a feeling of depression.

On the other hand, when one feels depressed, depression may overshadow all interests which leads to slow progression towards a goal. Depression is a common reaction to events that seem overwhelming or negative. The signs and symptoms of depression and the severity of the problem vary and the significance of the precipitating event.

So, the question now is "Which really comes first? Depression or procrastination?"

Some signs and symptoms of procrastination.

A lack of self-control is one bad habit to procrastinate. Finding oneself setting aside important tasks for an insignificant exciting activity might eventually lead to continuous practice on the inertial process.

Lack of organization wherein what needs to be done first would actually land to incomplete tasks. Less productivity may lead to lesser job contribution that would result to low effectivity.

Introducing negative ideas such as "I don't want to. I couldn't do it. I feel tired. I don't feel like it. It's too scary." blunt exertions towards ones achievement.

Signs and symptoms of depression.

Emotional symptoms can include feelings of tiredness, sadness, emptiness, or numbness. Behavioral signs include irritability, inability to concentrate, difficulty making decisions, loss of sexual desire, crying, sleep disturbance, and social withdrawal. Physical signs of depression may include loss of appetite, weigh loss, constipation, headache, and dizziness.

Overcome procrastination.

The first thing to overcome this procrastinating process is to stop and address the problem right away! Consider intelligent ways to respond. If the problem is self-control, learn some disciplinary actions. Regulating this destructive habit is identifying the root cause issue. Practice some time management skills that would help find ways to reach ones goals and tame ones time.

Approach for depression.

Perhaps the best means in dealing with mild to moderate depression might be exercise, cognitive-behavioral therapy, organizing and focusing, and acceptance of the effects of depression suffered, which reduces how much one can accomplish.

Making the Best of Your Time With a Schedule

By Alice Coaxum

Time is one thing that we cannot save for later. We simply cannot go back and use leftover time. Once it passes it is gone so it is best to use it wisely while it is here.

If you find that you are having trouble trying to fit everything you need to do in a day, week or even a month then a schedule may be just what you need.

To best maximize the time you have you need to first figure out everything you need to get done.

Start by creating a monthly schedule that covers Sunday through Saturday and has the days broken down by hours.

Then you will want to block out times for sleeping, bathing and dressing, hair styling and make up and fill in daily meal times. These are set times that you will not be available to do anything else so by filling these in first you help ensure that you do not make a mistake with scheduling your time.

Next you will want to write everything down that you need to get done in a month. Include Dr. appointments, work, exercise, meal preparing, studying or reading and any other activities you participate in.

If you work from home you may want to even break down a list of all the activities you need to do to work from home and place this on the schedule as well. This list will vary from person to person.

Having a schedule can keep you from scrambling to get things done and getting overwhelmed.

Now you need to give each item a number from one to ten, prioritizing each activity. Those labeled from numbers one through five are the items you want to put on your schedule first, things that must be done on a daily or weekly basis.

Finally place the items from six to ten on your schedule. Some of these activities may be things you only do every two weeks or even once a month so schedule accordingly.

Be sure to schedule time for relaxing and spending time with your spouse, children or family.

Do not feel bad if you accidentally go off schedule from time to time. Life happens and sometimes the day does not go exactly as planned and you may even have to go back and revise your schedule, but if you are having trouble getting things done a schedule can be a great tool to help you stay on track.

It's All A Question of Balance

By Allen Jesson

Life is really just like a race at an athletics track. You arrive and before you know it, the starter's gun has been fired and you're off and running. Well, just lying there initially, then crawling, then walking and then you start to run. But you find that there are other runners involved in your 'race around the track'. Yes, it's a relay race and you actually have four runners.

As in any relay race, you cannot win unless all four runners complete their mission. So it is with life. There is no point in being healthy, wealthy and wise, if you're not happy. No point in being happy, wealthy and wise if your health fails. I'm sure you get my point. Life is a question of balance and your job is to make sure that you get all four runners over the line. You've got to make sure that all of your four runners complete their leg and don't drop the baton along the way. For example, there's no point in working 100 hours a week to make loads of money, only for your heart to give out way before it's sell by date. There's also no point in making a load of money at the expense of others. Or dying ignorant. You won't find enlightenment and happiness there. So, enough examples, I'll keep this one short. The secret is:

"In the race of life, to get all of your runners over the line. Not one, not two, not three, but all four".

(The runners are better known as being Happy, Healthy, Wealthy and Wise).

Daily Planners and Organizers

by Nicole Roberts

Many people find it difficult to meet the expectations of their teachers, families, and jobs. The use of daily planners and organizers is one step in the right direction when it comes to completing necessary tasks. These planners can be found in a small notebook format that can be easily carried with you throughout the day. It can be beneficial if you learn to depend on this type of item. You will see the success you can achieve within just a few days of using one.

Daily planners should be written in often to keep track of any upcoming events. All of your assignments, tasks, and deadlines should be recorded in these books so you do not forget to work on anything. You should refer to the organizer several times throughout the day, just to be sure that everything you need to take care of has been completed. The worse thing that can happen is a missed deadline due to not checking your planner.

When you write in your daily planner, be sure you are thorough. State the dates, times, and locations for meetings that you need to attend. In-depth information should be written regarding assignments. You do not want to refer to the planner and then have to look elsewhere for all the information you need when it can also be stored within your organizer.

You can choose to use daily planners and organizers to keep track of multiple areas in your life. If you want to do this all within one planner, consider keeping it organized well so that you can properly remember what need to be done. Writing with different colored ink for each life area is beneficial. For example, writing in red pen (which symbolizes love) when you are recording a family occasion, event, or task can help you select these in the future. Tasks related to work can be in green (which can be easily remembered because it is the color of money), while school assignments can be written in blue (which really has no connection...but it's just another color to help differentiate everything you need to do).

Make use of all the sections offered in daily planners. There is typically a monthly calendar, as well as individual pages for the days or weeks. Short descriptions can be placed on the calendar, and then you can expand on the item within the day or week pages. Addresses can also be stored within some daily planners and organizers. This will help you keep contact information on you at all times.

Creating goals and to-do list within your planner is also effective. The main idea behind this book is just to remind you not to forget anything. There are sometimes small tasks we need to do such as pick up milk, run by the post office, or send out a memo. These activities may not need a large section of your planner to remember them, but they can still be jotted down in a daily list so they are not forgotten.

5 Steps to Deal With Fear

By Shaw Funami

Among people's emotions, fear is the one which people has a problem dealing with most. Fear is deep emotion, which cannot be so easily avoided, addressed, or conquered. Instead of anger, being a simple burst of emotional force, which could be ceased after such burst, fear could be quiet cancer, which eats inside of your mind. There is an analysis that fear is the real cause of anger. One would show his anger because he did not like to express his fear. This theory explains why people tends to be angry if others pointed out their true weakness. People are angry when others point their true weakness based on their fear that others would find their weakness. In this sense, fear and anger could be called face and tail of a coin. People need to address their fear to manage their anger.

According to my cousin, who is a psychologist, 87% of fear of people is one, which is groundless, unreasonable, and meaningless. People do not have to deal with this kind of fear. He suggested that one might not attempt to address fears immediately. He recommends to his clients to set one day in a week to deal with their fears. For example, one could decide to consider and address his fear on Thursday, every week. Even he felt fear and started to think about it on Sunday, he would wait until Thursday to address it. My cousin told me that more than 80% of people did not feel fear any longer, or they forgot about it by Thursday. The fear people did not forget or could not stop feeling were the real ones which one need to address. In this way, one can distinguish real fear and meaningless fear.

Based on the above, one could establish the way or process to cope with his fear. They are simple, though they may not be easy.

1. Accept that you have fear instead of hiding it with anger.

2. Stop thinking about the fear on that moment. Take some time to address it.

3. Think if the cause of fear is manageable by human power.

4. If found not manageable by human capacity, accept again it is unmanageable.

5. Since it is beyond human capability, leave it to time and Higher Power. Trust them that they can take care of them.

When one becomes fearful, it is not so easy to follow the above processes with calm and serene status of mind and brain. Remember, at least, one thing. If your fear is unmanageable within human capacity, you can deal with it. If you cannot solve it with your power, it is meaningless and wasting time if you continue to think and worry about it.

Excellent Decision Making

By Chibuike Nnamani

To Make decisions is never easy, particularly when it comes to making those important decisions that can potentially change your life. This is why before you make a decision, you 'll have put a lot of thought into it. This means carefully examining and assessing the situation, as well as contemplating the pros & cons, and possible consequences/ side-effects of the decisions the individual is about to be make.

Below are vital tips on excellent decision-making:

1. Firstly, thorough assessment if the decision you are about to make will be the right one for you. This means assessing your needs, and really finding out the reason why you are making this decision in the first place.

For instance, if the decision you are about to make concerns the college of your choice, you must ask yourself these questions: Are you being influenced by friends and family? Peer pressure, is it becoming an issue? What about money, is it also becoming a problem? Are you being practical about the decision you are about to make, or are you possibly setting yourself up for failure, by making an evidently impractical decision?

2. Make out time to study your options. When making a decision that implies a choice, you should look into your options - whether this involves a decision in regards to purchasing a new house, vacation destination, or a university of choice. You should take the time to study, research, and evaluate all your options. This way, you can limit your alternatives to that one choice that would be just the right one for you.

3. Different individuals who need serious help when it comes to decision-making can make use of decision-making seminars, sessions, and training.
Many organizations offer you the chance to improve you decision-making skills by attending their programs. If you feel the need for such help, do some research on the internet for the local listings of these courses that are held within your vicinity.

4. Map out big decisions ahead of time. Don't leave everything to the last minute, because this is a sure recipe for disaster. Making big plans ahead of time will give you enough time to prepare for the contingencies if it comes to that. It never hurts and not considered a crime to have a plan B, in case your original plan doesn't work out.

Also, planning saves you time. For instance if you are planning to get a new car, you 're expected to make some research. Create some time to go to different dealerships to compare differences in price-list, and check out types of offers that are available out there. Through this, you can make the best deal possible.

Note; the best decisions are never rushed. They are carefully thought out and made through careful planning.

5. Make out a list of pros and cons. This sounds a bit old fashion, but it is a time-tested method that will aid you in making the best decisions. Coming up with a list will give you a visual representation of your thoughts. This will also help you set priorities in order by writing a list of your preferences, goals, and needs. On the other hand, this will also allow you the opportunity to evaluate the downside to the potential choices you are about to make.

To make a decision is sometimes be very difficult, but nevertheless,it has to be done! The best way to go about this is to make sure that you give yourself plenty of time to think about it first. If possible, consult the ideas of friends and family members.

But in all, everyone makes their own decision. Therefore, you have to be wise, and give yourself the opportunity to make the best possible decisions!
