It's not uncommon to find an opening for a nurse practitioner job in a rural area. Part of the reason is there's a shortage of doctors to meet all of the medical needs of the nearby people. Since a nurse practitioner can be a patient's primary health care provider, these individuals are valuable to a community. This is especially true when there isn't a great deal of medical help available to provide quality medical care.
A nurse practitioner will see some of the same issues as a family practice physician. The position will treat all ages, including adults and pediatric outpatients. This person will see a wide variety of illnesses and sickness. They include everything from H&P's, a large variety of chronic diseases, sick visits, and things dealing with women's health. Most will also need to have experience with all kinds of suturing, EMR, and EKG interpretation.
In a clinic setting, this job entails reasonable office hours. Tasks tend to focus on a patient's condition, as well as how the issue effects the patient and their family. The core philosophy of this type of care is considered individualized, which means a nurse practitioner tries to keep something from happening. They focus more on prevention, wellness, and patient education. Because of how the medical care is organized, there tend to be fewer prescriptions written and treatments are cheaper.
Anyone who takes on this job, especially one with a particular medical service will receive medical and dental insurance, life insurance, and a 401(k) retirement savings plan. The pay is competitive and there is the potential for incentives. It's not a position for everyone, especially those who can't live in a rural area.
