Provide Continued Care As a Locum Tenens Family Practice Physician

By : Wanda Edwards

Whether you are a seasoned physician looking for a change of pace or a new doctor searching for the perfect first job, a locum tenens family practice opening could be the ideal position. These arrangements can be very fulfilling. Some doctors feel they provide better patient care because of the lack of administrative burdens.

A family practice physician has a lot of responsibilities and is often the first step in diagnosing a serious condition or helping deliver a new baby into the world. In a way, these doctors are sometimes considered a jack-of-all-trades as they see everything and anything. In one day, you could deliver a baby, perform a physical, give a pap smear, and provide care to an elderly patient. It is time consuming work that is very rewarding, but also very burdensome. The pace is busy and a day is filled with activity. It requires organization to stay ahead of all the chaos. It is easy to see why a family practice doctor needs a longer break now and then, as it's necessary for protecting their own health.

If the practice is large enough, other doctors in the clinic will cover their fellow physician's responsibilities while he or she takes a needed break. However, there are times where this won't work. Maybe the sabbatical is going to be too lengthy. Other times there is a high patient load and the other doctors can't add any more responsibilities. This is where a locum tenens physician can step in and fulfill a need. The temporary coverage helps provide continued care to all the patients.

Being a locum tenens physician isn't for everyone, as it requires flexibility, travel, and the ability to partner with people you might not see in a month. At the same time, it can be very rewarding.
