Is It Possible to Hold Multiple Physician Assistant Jobs?

By : Wanda Edwards

With about seventy-five thousand physician assistant jobs filled during 2008, and the increasing demand for people qualified to do these jobs, it is still possible to hold more than one. In fact, about fifteen percent of PA work in more than one PA job at a time. The reasons for this should be looked at first before you consider accepting more than one.

These jobs are very lucrative and constantly growing with new technology and methods for treatment, not all of these jobs are full-time. Therefore it is not uncommon for practicing physician assistants to have to currently take on two positions, whether with the same doctor or by assisting two. However, there are other ways that you can hold down more than one of these jobs:

* the position is only part-time and you want to work on call for whichever doctor needs you locally
* your position is only part-time and you can get part-time work with a medical training centre, private clinic or public schools
* your position is only part-time and you want to also do the same work through the military as a reservist

The reality is that only half of the existing physician assistant jobs are held in doctor's offices or clinics. Many other positions are also available part-time through hospitals, specialized clinics, outpatient type centers, health organizations, government departments, private colleges/universities and surgical units. In larger organizations, depending on the patient load and the doctor that is supervising, especially if that doctor is a consultant or takes special patient referrals, some positions may be full-time. However, as the demand for physician assistants continues to grow dramatically, finding part-time positions where it is possible for you to do more than one physician assistant job may become harder as doctors and surgeons are stretched even further by patient demands.
