How to Write a Good Resume

In these recession hit times, when an employer places an advertisement for a job opening, he/she is likely to receive hundreds of replies. Of all the resumes that are reviewed, only a handful are called in for interviews. Most job seekers wonder why did the employer select that specific set of resumes. The obvious answer would be that those candidates were most suitable for the job. However, this is not always the case. A well-framed resume can portray one as a superior candidate for a job, even over other better qualified candidates. How to write a good resume is something that even experienced job holders often have a problem with. A few resume writing tips, can however, solve this problem effectively.

The objective of your resume is to get you that interview call. A good resume should convince the prospective employer that you will deliver. The first thing to take into consideration is what the employer is looking for, which you should assess by placing yourself in the employer's shoes. If you are applying for a job in your field, you will know what would make anyone a perfect candidate. However, if you are venturing into a new field, pick up pointers from the help wanted ads or ask friends. Use this information, and frame your resume to convince the prospective employer that you are a truly exceptional candidate.

Resume Formats

There are four different resume styles in which all your information may be structured. The chronological resumes present information according to a timeline. Functional resumes contain categories of work experience and skills according to skill area or job function. Combination resumes combine the first two while highlighting one's skills and experiences. The most detailed is a Curricula Vitae (CV), which provides a lengthy descriptive statement of qualifications and experience. Choose the format that suits your industry best.

A popular resume format is to split all your information into two sections. The first section allows the employer to get to know you personally by illustrating your abilities and attributes. The second section contains proof of all that you have stated in the first section, and contains your educational qualifications and work experience. The best place to include details of your name, address, phone number, and your email address are at the top of the first page.

Tips for Effective Resume Writing

Objective: Professional resumes always start by stating your objective. The reason it is important to include an objective is because it demonstrates that you have clarity of career direction. In a resume tailored for a certain opening, your objective could name the position you are applying for. Another effective way to write an objective is to include qualities that the employer is seeking. For example, 'Objective - a reporters position in an organization seeking an extraordinary record of uncovering new stories and delivering high quality writing'. This will convey that as you want to do exactly what they desire, and are thus likely to succeed at it.

Work Experience and Education: When you write down all the jobs you have held, start with your most recent and/or relevant job, and follow with earlier jobs, i.e., list them in reverse. Do the same with your educational qualifications. When you write about college, only include your major and distinctions or awards you have won, unless you are still in college or just recently graduated. If your grade-point average is not impressive, leave it out.

Personal Interests and References: This section, containing your hobbies and interests, should appear towards the end of your resume. Through this section, you should convey well-roundedness, good physical health, or knowledge of a subject related to your goal. It also helps get a conversation started during an interview. Your references should be the very last section of your resume. It is best to just say, 'references available upon request'.

Presentation: Presentation tips on resume writing include symmetry, balance and sufficient white space. There should be consistent use of italics, capital letters, bullets, boldface, and underlining. Ensure there are no errors, factual, typographical or otherwise. An important ingredient in how to write a good resume is simple and direct language. Use good quality paper and printing for your resume.

Researching for resume examples will give you inputs on how to write a professional resume. Most people underestimate the power of a well-written resume. Use these tips on how to write a good resume to give your job search a shot in the arm and your career a boost.

Creative Jobs Can Help You Earn More

By : Michael S Fish

Are you in the search for a creative and passionate career? Well, then pursue your dreams and do what you're best at. Some of the most creative careers include fashion designing, architecture and interior designing, landscaping, music, creative writing or freelance writing, graphic designing, or careers in personal aesthetics such as hair care or make up artistry. There are other options as well and some of these include professions in the visual and media arts, culinary arts or performing and literary arts.

For instance wedding planners and event managers have an exciting option lined up for them. Other than helping the side of the groom and the bride to organize the wedding and ensure that everything is flawless, the event manager coordinates with the different people who are involved in the wedding such as those who have been appointed to supply the flowers, cake, food, dresses, gowns, choir and the list goes on.

One thing that you need to remember is that you cannot get started in a creative career just like that. What you need for the purpose is to have a flair for it and the competence to handle it. Other than that the factors that are responsible for the choice of a creative career are:

* Personal choice
* Aptitude
* Professional criteria
* Financial feasibility

Indulge in a Career in Photography

A career in photography is a perfect alternative for all the creative minds that possess an artistic vision as well as skills that help them see beyond the basics of their art. Photographers have a variety of career options lined up for them, and some of these include everything from wedding photographers to portrait studio associates etc. Whether you photograph nature or people or the dusty urban environment, the choice of specialization is something that will depend upon the degrees obtained under the course. It will also indicate if you will prefer working on your own or if you want to work for anyone else.

Salary is also an important consideration of the photography jobs. A lot of freelancers start by working on the side as it is a competitive sphere. At times the jobs are widely available whereas at other times these are scarce, depending on the demand at that season. A beginner can earn as much as about $50000 a year once they have a solid base of clientele. The salary depends on the type of photography (like, wedding photographers have a high demand). The salary of fine art photographers is unpredictable as it depends on whether people are interested in buying their work. Since these jobs are not meant for everyone, it is important to know what you want.

Fashion Designing is a Lucrative Creative Career Option for You

The fashion market is one of the most popular, profitable and interesting careers to take your pick from. That's because there is an ever increasing market for fashion designers and creative designers. Every single day brings a new area of interest for the fashion career with the designers all around the globe contending to have their hottest creations out on the ramp. The trend towards urbanization has led to a huge array of fashionable clothes being the choice for every generation. With fashion designing, other sectors are related such as retailing, purchasing and merchandising. The first thing that you need to get started in a fashion designing career is to identify your skills for evaluating whether you are suited to the needs of the industry.

The basic skills that would be required for this creative career are knowledge of colors and clothing, having the ability to sew, and finally dedication and commitment towards your goal. Getting enrolled in a fashion school will help train you in developing your skills further. With the right kind of education, and by choosing the right institution, you will be guided to getting good opportunities to prove your mettle. The fashion schools often organize internship classes for grooming the new talents for learning and acquiring skills that are required for getting the right exposure in thefashion jobs. Social networking is equally important to get started with new clients and projects.

Do you have the Musical Genius in You?

Have you always dreamed of making it big in the world of music? Music is a hugely popular field of creative arts, although not every one of us has the capacity to hone our musical skills and talents. So, with the present trend being towards that of multiple talent hunts and music reality shows, more and more talented individuals are looking ahead to prove themselves while at the same time getting widespread media coverage and a huge fan base. However, what you need to remember in this case is that the musical field, though popular and attractive in its own right, is a difficult area to break into owing to the huge competition and demand versus supply of jobs.

Often, youths with a musical talent will try to obtain jobs in music by looking for options of playing in a band or performing in an orchestra for getting a job in the sector. All you need for the purpose is the determination to succeed which is actually more important than relying on luck and talent. This is because there are a lot of talented individuals out there waiting to get in. moreover, luck is unreliable and to conquer it, you need commitment. With formal training and a little experience, you can make headway in the aspect of music.

With the above round up of a few creative jobs, what needs to be mentioned is that while the prospect of getting into a creative job is apparently unique, to start with, before taking the plunge you should note that this is an extremely unpredictable sector where performance and success does not come from the work available alone. You need to complement the availability of projects with your creativity and inner inspiration which will take care of success in the job that you are in, be it fashion jobs or photography jobs.

Make Money in This Economy! You Can - Ask Millionaires!

By : Victoria Labecki

Did you know the same amount of money is still here in the U.S., it's simply flowing differently? I heard this from a millionaire himself, one of the founders of a company I'm proud to call myself a member of. You see, it's not about what's lacking. Oh, how the media always loves the drama of it all, unemployment rates, companies bankrupt... Yes, this is REAL and it's affecting lives, and I'm sorry to hear about the difficulty people are facing. But I am compelled to ask you: where is your mind? Are you letting yourself be defeated? Because it's not (and never was) about external circumstances and controlling you or millionaires!

The difference between those that are making money and those that are struggling financially stems from your mindset! And ultimately, it's about where you position yourself in this flow of money. Because you do make a choice to act, even when you choose not to make a decision, sit, and do nothing.

Lets talk about uncontrollable circumstances. Donald Trump went bankrupt twice, Robert Kiyosaki did too. And they are both very wealthy NOW. This is because they made up their minds that they were getting back up every time life knocked them down. So what is your choice? How will you position yourself to be in that flow of money?

* FACT: The number of millionaires SOARED in 2009! (Just last year!)
* FACT: Home Businesses are and have been on the rise, especially the past few years
* FACT: There are industries that are growing TODAY, including Personal and Prosperity

Development

So where are the wealthy going? They're doing their own thing, riding the waves of change - not drowning in them - and starting their own businesses in booming industries!

I share this with you because what people thought was security, are finding that even when they've been with a company 20 years, they're still getting laid off or their industry is failing them. (If you or anyone you know was in the Real Estate, Mortgage or even Medical Sales industries - then you know!) What about taking control of your own career? What about being directly in control of your own income?

Think about it. Where you are right now, can you achieve your dreams? What would you do if money wasn't an issue? That's what these home businesses provide. There are are tons of these opportunities out there, some better than others, and some are simpler than others. Those that are the best have a business plan created for simplicity and success, and are in a growing industry.

Teaching Jobs For Helping People With Special Needs

By : John J Edwards

Fortunate are those souls who are gifted with all the basic amenities of life. They have a luxurious life to lead and yet they complain. In many parts of the world people do not even have the proper conception of amenities, what are those things which they are entitled to? For them living life everyday is like a struggle with the adversities with which they have been gifted. Sitting in their cozy homes many cry and crib over the food they have been served, while there are others who do not have the option to even fetch a morsel for themselves.

During harsh winter some complain of the quality of blankets, while those unfortunate souls don't have enough to be clad with. Your children may be in a position to throw tantrums about reading an extra bed time story book in place of the books prescribed by their schools, but those fortune ravaged souls have even been deprived the light of education. If you are able to empathize with them then there are lots of things that you can do for these innocent and unfortunate people.

If you are in a big city, then it has to offer you with more than just opportunities. Learning to teach those children and people who are different from the ordinary is not just an opportunity but it's like responding to your true call. If you don't know how to go about with your noble mission of teaching the destitute then get yourself registered with organizations that work with under privileged sections of people in your city.

You may prefer to register there online or even give them a call to know more about their working style. They mainly operate in the areas in and around big cities like London. They will give you teaching jobs in your preferred area. You can just choose to teach anywhere in your city which has no dearth of physically and mentally challenged souls. They are waiting to be helped by you.

They have hopes and they believe more in your abilities than their own, as some of the children and adults with whom these organizations work, suffer from SEBD (social emotional and behavioral difficulties), SLD (severe learning difficulties) PMLD (profound and multiple learning difficulties) and SPLD (special learning difficulties). Their parents can't even teach them to dream, their handicaps have literally cocooned them from their own sublime emotions. A helping hand from you, and some of your precious time can help them overcome their difficulties to some extent.

They want to see this world with your eyes as some of the children are visually impaired. As pure as the morning dew drops, they want to dance with joy but the letters they read dance in stead, may be you can teach them learn how to read them, as some of the children and adults are dyslexic. Autism, dyscalculia, dyspraxia are some of the deadly handicaps which have not only rendered them incapable, but have also made their loved ones incapable of daring to dream. Do they deserve this life? They were so much wanted when they were born, then why should they not get the love they were entitled to? And if they deserve it then how do they get it? The answer lies within you.

Register with a noble organization and take the responsibility of helping them. Create a difference to their world and bring a purpose to your living by answering to this divine call.

Make the Time to Find Online Adjunct Income and Smile

By : Michael Greene

It is hard to find the motivation to search for more traditional college courses to teach because of the difficult economic times for all colleges and universities, but if you have an earned graduate degree and want to teach online as a college adjunct instructor it is well worth the effort to make the time to find online adjunct income and smile all the way to the bank. One possible motivation for seeking out accredited online college degree programs to teach for is that many of them offer online classes to their students throughout the summer months. This means that an online adjunct instructor can generate multiple income streams for the entire calendar year. Another source of motivation is that online teaching is completely portable in the sense that the online degree programs are on the Internet and the online instructor's office is an inexpensive laptop computer.

New and returning college students want to take online college classes because they save money and time by not having to drive a personal vehicle to a remote college campus, park and then walk a long distance to an old building and sit for hours listening to a lecture or taking a test in a drafty classroom. They prefer to earn an elementary education degree online, an online business degree or an engineering degree online by using their personal computers at home. As a consequence of these college students' preferences the online instructor is also not required to drive a personal vehicle to work and can, in fact, teach online from practically any location in the world that offers a wireless connection to the Internet.

The online adjunct income earned from teaching for multiple online college degree programs can be significant and regular. An online college instructor with well developed technical skills and a strong sense of time management can earn forty to sixty thousand dollars a year by coordinating six to ten online college classes at one time. This level of online teaching is not all that easy, but it is possible with the right attitude and the willingness to put in the necessary hours to satisfy the online associate deans and department supervisors.

The best part about earning an online adjunct income for many online adjunct instructors is that the implementation of distance education technology by traditional college and universities is in the very beginning stages, and there thousands more traditional post-secondary academic institutions than there are for-profit schools that confer the online bachelor degree and online master's degree. This means that as an emerging career path online teaching is in its earliest stages and those who master the required skill sets will certainly benefit as more and more online degree programs are made available to college students. With the economy in a free fall and faculty budgets at traditional schools tightening on a daily basis, the individual with an earned graduate degree or the person willing to enroll in an online master's degree and complete the course work will be well served by opportunities offered by working as an online adjunct instructor in the field of distance education.

The Modern Balancing Act - Achieving Work-Life Balance

By : Hallie Crawford

Tired of teetering out of control? Do you feel overwhelmed by your work, home and family responsibilities? Are you frequently stressed because you can't get everything done? If your life seems like a circus...juggling work, home and family responsibilities - you're not alone. Many people just like you feel like their life is leading them, instead of them leading a purpose driven life and choosing where they spend their time. So, who's running the show? Is it your Crackberry, your laptop, your boss - or you? If your answer is something else than you it's time to get back in the driver's seat!

Life balance is a buzzword these days for good reason. It's a chronic issue that comes up in conversation because quite simply, life has become harder to manage. With email, Crackberry's and everything else demanding our attention it's no wonder we get bogged down in to-do lists and wonder at the end of the day where the time went. We're expected to work faster and more efficiently, plus we're more accessible than ever because of new technology that allows us to work or communicate from anywhere. Information comes at us faster than ever. And this trend shows no sign of stopping.

The problem with your life being out of balance is...

-You're not focusing your attention and time where you want to, and not living the life you want to live.

-It feels like your life is on autopilot, like someone else is driving the bus and you are not in control.

-When you feel pressured to handle so many tasks and have so many demands on your time, you lose creative thinking and effectiveness - not to mention becoming physically exhausted.

On the flip side of this issue is we all want greater fulfillment in our lives and careers than ever before. It's no longer acceptable to punch a time clock at the same job for our whole lives and wait until retirement to have fun. We want fulfillment and balance now. I've noticed through my career coaching practice that while people are craving greater balance they are having more trouble achieving it.

So what can you do to create balance in your life today? Here are some tips:

Step One: Make a list of the different areas of your life where you're not spending as much time and energy as you'd like. For example, if you've lost touch with friends and family or aren't connecting with them as frequently as you want to, put that down. Come up with at least 3 areas that need work in terms of your time and attention.

a. In each of these 3 areas, identify one action step you can take in the next week to improve upon that area. Will you make a commitment to call one friend in the next week, or spend time with at least one family member? Make the action step simple, realistic and give yourself a deadline. Taking one step in each of these areas will create greater balance in your life. Continue to do this every week until you develop a habit of attending to the areas of your life that are important to you.

Step Two: Learn to Balance Work and Personal Time. If work is one of those areas that's taking over your life, try some of these techniques to better manage your work time and attention.

a. Turn off your blackberry, phone and/or email when you need focused time to work on a project.

b. Set your email to only check emails when you press send/receive, not every time an email comes through. Having the email buzz at you whenever you receive a new message is incredibly distracting.

c. Turn off your voicemail or email chime on your phone. Make a commitment to only check your voicemail and email twice a day at certain times.

d. Prioritize your tasks on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. Consciously choose where you focus your time and energy.

e. Plan ahead. When you know a big project is coming up plan for how you need to spend your time and delegate other tasks as necessary. Don't wait for crunch time to re-arrange your priorities.

f. Set boundaries.

i. Decide how late you are willing to stay at work each night - 6:00, 7:00 pm? And how frequently this will happen.

ii. Before you dive into a task, determine how much time you can and will spend on that task. Set a goal for yourself, you'll be more likely to achieve it.

Your action steps don't have to be complicated; they simply require time for self-reflection and a true commitment to implement. When you create greater balance in your life you will experience: greater fulfillment, effectiveness, and productivity. You will be less stressed and won't get sick as often. And most importantly you'll be leading the life you want to lead!

Marketing For Freelancers and Entrepreneurs - Selling Yourself in the New Economy

By : Loren Woirhaye

The new economy is a competitive place and you'll have to be a marketer in order not to be marginalized by the marketplace.

In brief: If you cannot market and sell your ideas to your employers and colleagues, you'll be exploited and under-paid.

Fifty years ago, giant corporations offered a lifetime of job security and upward mobility. Today you'll have to be more flexible in your working skills because chances are the jobs you are doing today will not be the ones you are doing in 5 or ten years.

In our current 2010 economic meltdown in the United States, we have a chorus of workers demanding the government create jobs. I'm not too astute about politics or economics, but it seems to me that the workers should be busting their buns to get new skills with more value in the new economy instead grousing about the loss of the obsolete jobs they lost.

In the news, a factory worker who for 25 years has put in his hours and spent his off-time watching television rather than bettering himself cries angrily at the government to replace his lost job. I ask this: how many books has he read in the last year about improving his earning capacity by learning new skills?

I am not being political here. It is a very practical matter. If your skills are no longer valued where you are, you have two basic options to improve your standard of living:

1. Go to where your skills are valued. The move may be geographical but if you are a knowledge worker and not a physical worker, you may be able to work remotely.

2. Learn new skills that are valued or will be valued where you are.

During the industrial revolution workers moved from farms to cities in order to do better financially. It did not always work out for workers, but consider that 19th century farming was pretty unscientific and unpredictable, the idea of stable, long-term industrial employment was attractive to poor rural folk.

In today's shifting new economy the likelihood of you becoming very prosperous doing any form of work other than knowledge work is remote. Knowledge work can be creative work and it can involve physical activity, but the driving force behind the value a knowledge worker provided is not in his or her muscles, but between his or her ears.

Get Over Yourself

In my work as a marketing consultant I have had clients who boasted to me of their sales prowess - ie. "I can sell anything to anybody"

When I hear that I think 1. "you have a big ego" and 2. "if you are so skilled, why do you need my help?"

From personal experience hiring and managing salespeople I know they can be quite un-humble in assessing their own skills yet when it came time for them to dial for dollars (I ran a phone sales operation), very few would actually get positive results.

The closer you get to real mastery of a skill, the more you realize how hard it really is. By way of example: I thought I was a much more skilled guitar player 5 years ago than I think am today, even though today I am much more skilled in reality. The difference is now I am humble about it because I realize how much I have yet to learn to truly master the instrument.

The less you know about a topic the more likely you are to have a sophomoric ("wise fool") view of its challenges. It is common for people to overvalue their own prowess. While I'm much too polite to tell anybody to their face they are over-valuing their own skills you would do well yourself to assess your own present skills a bit critically.

Skills in sales and marketing are the same way - when you learn a little bit about it you'll start to think you are pretty hot stuff, when you really don't have the goods yet. This is all part of the learning process, so observe it without judgement in yourself. Even if you must brag to compete in the marketplace, try to be humble inside yourself because humility keeps you in the learning process. If you think you know everything you stop learning and get arrogance.

Preparation Matters - So Be Prepared

The Boy Scouts of America slogan "Be Prepared" is a bit of wisdom. I was never a boy scout and I've learned to be prepared through numerous instances of failure to be prepared, with disastrous consequences. Skilled salesmanship is all about being prepared, and in today's competitive marketplace it stands to reason that the people with the sharpest skills are going to be the winners.

Today's marketplace is a very sensitive environment because consumers have virtually endless choices of who they do business with. You'll want to pay attention to subtle details and part of preparation to market yourself or your product is learning what to look for. It's honing your instincts, if you want to think of it that way.

In order to market your products or self competitively you'll need to have a plan to communicate to the marketplace. Without one you'll be just like all the other poor sops without a clue who are forced to take what they can get, which usually isn't much.

Writing is communication and any planned communication involves writing. All effective salesmanship and marketing must be planned to succeed and sell the product. That's because our brains work in a somewhat mysterious but fairly predictable way. The old sales gurus figured out a lot of stuff intuitively by observing people. Now we have mounting research into consumer behavior.

What is indisputable is that some people seem to have a "knack" for selling. Unfortunately, I am not one of those people. Selling does not come naturally or easily to me. Everything I've learned about how to sell has come from hard work and diligent study and I suggest to you that selling and marketing are very learnable skills.

If you're selling face to face or on the phone, you may not really be a marketer. A salesman relies a great deal on his ears for listening and his voice for talking. A marketer uses a pen instead of the voice. This allows the marketer to have leverage, but it also means if you want to be a really skilled and successful marketer, you need to hone your writing skills.

Five Ways to Get Your Career on Track and Keep it There

By : Leonard Kloeber

If you want to get promoted and achieve sustained success in your chosen career, you need to do more than just "a good job." Career success in any field is a combination of skill, sustained performance, and an ongoing personal marketing plan. Most people who succeed are focused on doing more than just showing up at work and doing a good job. They are self-promoters who know what they want and go after it. Self-promotion can be offensive to some, but it doesn't have to be that way. If you don't promote yourself, no one else will. So here are some basic tips on how to advance your career more quickly than simply showing up for work and hoping someone will notice you:

Be clear about your career objectives: Many people find themselves in jobs by some quirk of circumstances. They either took the job because it was the best available opportunity at the time, or someone referred them to their current employer. So if you find yourself in a job that is not exactly what you want to do for the rest of your career, then the first step to career success is to define exactly what you want to do. Only then can you define the next steps to advance your career in a new direction.

Find a mentor: A common myth is that many successful people are self-made. To the extent that they took responsibility for their career choices and pursued opportunities, then this is a true statement; however, most successful people also have support from a mentor or even several mentors who helped them along the way. A mentor who has "been there, done that" and who may be in a higher organizational position to make opportunities available is invaluable to career success. Most successful people have had at least one or more mentors to coach them and help them along, even if they won't admit it. So once you have decided on a definite career path, find someone who has already succeeded. See if they might be willing to be your mentor. If not, keep on looking until you find someone who is willing to help you.

Be an expert: Being an expert is about developing your "brand," you professional reputation. Ideally, you want to position yourself as the "go to" person in your field. How can you develop your brand? Do what all experts do: they write articles, speak at conventions, write blogs, and continually develop their expertise. Today there are many more ways that you can share your expertise by using web-enabled tools. Some simple things you can do are write and publish an article on a web based publishing site like EzineArticles.com or start you own blog to share your expertise with peers in your industry. You don't need to blog every day, but you do need to do it with consistency over time at regular intervals. A blog is not only a good way for you to share your own expertise, but to also learn from colleagues who comment on your posts. Whatever method you choose to use, you need to do some of these typical activities that will establish you as an expert in your field.

Network, Network, Network: Networking is another vital key to a successful career. The more people you know in your industry, and more importantly, the more people who know you, will determine whether opportunities come your way. Although technology has changed, human nature is still the same as it has been for years. One fundamental human tendency is that people like to avoid risk. They prefer to go with what is familiar. Thus, they look to people they already know when they need to hire someone new. If you have a strong network of industry colleagues who know you, you can count on being contacted when opportunities arise. Keeping track of your network is easier than ever using tools like "LinkedIn" to stay in touch. Start expanding your network now in advance of your need to find a new opportunity. It will pay a big dividend on your investment of time.

Keep looking at new opportunities: It takes some discipline to keep abreast of new opportunities, but by staying in tune with what is going on in your company and your industry, you will come across opportunities when you are not expecting it. This will allow you to choose the best opportunities rather than simply settle for what might be available.

These five simple strategies are fundamental to career success. They take time and discipline to implement them; however if you take a look at how successful people have advanced their careers, you will find that they have used most or all of these techniques. You can use them too, and they also pay off with promotions, enhanced compensation, and satisfying career positions. If you want to have your career take off, even when the economy is not, then decide which of these strategies will work best for you and get to work!

Think Wide If You're Thinking About Changing Your Career

By : Hanks Somecotton

No matter how fun you think your job is in the beginning there are several reasons why you can get tired at your work after a while. Changes in life. You have got other priorities or a need to get new tasks and new clients are some examples. One advantage is that it is almost always much easier to get a new job when you already have a job.

If you want to start looking for a new job while you are still at your old employer, be sure to be very discreet. Do not talk to colleagues about the job you are looking for. Do not use your work email to send requests to other jobs and try to search the job outside your regular working hours so you do not lose the focus from your current job.

Experience often weighs very heavily when searching for work. It is therefore a good idea to contact the company in an industry where you previously worked or currently work on. But remember to not share any secrets from your former or current employer. It can get really unfortunate. On some jobs it is also forbidden to work with companies that compete directly with your employer in a number of months after you resigned yourself.

The challenge you are looking for is maybe there at your current employer without you being aware of it. Many times it is about daring to ask and express your desire and goal for your boss. Perhaps a position on a completely different title will be vacant soon. That a new career opportunity opens for you without you having to change job.

A new job or a new career change is a good opportunity to reflect over what priorities you have in your career or life. What balance you want to have between your work and your free time. How much time and effort would you be able to put on your own development, on your friends, on travels or home? If you know your priorities and really want a new job, ensure that you and your former employer is separated as friends. Be clear to your employer and be happy to talk about why you quit. Honesty is best so you don't loose your contacts. Your contacts and your boss may be needed as a reference later in life. Manage your cancellation professionally. It creates a good atmosphere and increases your chances to get a positive rating work when you quit your job.

Think wide if you're thinking about changing your career. Dare to look for jobs where you might not meet all the qualifications but you feel that you really want the job. Enthusiasm and job satisfaction is often more important than a perfect CV.

Problem sentences for resume writers

Resumes represent who you are as a professional and job seeker. Writing an outstanding resume that properly states your objective and describes your skills and experience can be a challenge. The basic components in a typical resume are the objective, which describes the job you are seeking; skills and experience, which explains what kind of job skills you possess and the years and type of experience you have in the industry; and education and certifications, which includes the knowledge and education you have pertaining to the job for which you are applying. These descriptions may vary depending on the kind of job you are seeking. When creating a resume there are certain words you should and should not include. There are specific words that are more descriptive and easier to understand.

Here are examples of some common words that may weaken your resume and other words and phrases you should avoid all together are:

“Responsible for”—this is too general and makes it sound like a duty not a responsibility. Instead list your accomplishments and the skills you used to perform your job.

“Successfully”—this sounds too much like bragging. Give concrete examples of your accomplishments and they should speak for themselves. Don’t use works like effectively and successfully, it sounds too much like you are trying to exaggerate.

“Assist, Contribute and Support”—all of these words are too vague. They raise the question of how? Use these words sparingly and follow up with a detailed description of how you did the tasks.

Never use flowery words or clichés. Keep your wording simple and to the point leaving no room for guessing or interpretation. Instead of “utilize”, say, “use” and instead of “contribute”, say, “add.”

Avoid abbreviation and acronyms. These can cause confusion and look like a word scramble.

Do not use negative words like boring, fired, hate and sexist. Your resume should be positive and these kinds of words can raise a “red flag” and kill your chances of an interview.

Never misspell any word. Make sure you spell check everything. Misspelled words can kill your chances of ever getting an interview.

Knowing the words you should not use can help you correct problem sentences in your resume. Some examples of problem sentences in a resume that should be changed or revises are:

Responsible for data entry, answering incoming calls, greeting customers and assisting office personnel.

Revision: Performed data entry operations, answered incoming calls, greeted customers and helped office personnel with miscellaneous tasks.

Successfully operated cash register, assisted customers with purchases and balanced cash receipts at the end of the day.

Revision: Operated cash register, helped customers with purchases and balanced cash register.

Duties include Internet research, creating and updating information, writing research analysis and keeping database current.

Revision: Researched marketing information on the Internet, updated information as needed, wrote research analysis, and kept database current.

The problem sentences above contained some words that weakened the statement and left questions in the mind of the reader. By substituting other words we made the sentence ready clearly and improved the quality and understanding of the explanation. By using words that are concise and simple you can make your resume easier to read and understand. Using the proper text can make a big difference when it comes to getting the job you want.

Tips For a Happy Nursing Career

By : Adam M. Anderson

A nursing career can be highly rewarding; but not in the same way other careers might. As a nurse, you walk a winding path and have great opportunity to touch people's lives in a way that others do not. As a nurse, you have immense responsibility and patients look to you as their support system as well as their care giver. Regardless of the overall path of your nursing career, there are things you can learn along the way that will help you gain understanding of yourself, feel better about yourself, and make your nursing career an enjoyable one.

While your job seems to be all about giving, it is important to state that a nurse must find ways to take care of their own health - both physically and emotionally. What it really mean is that you take care of your mindset; you spend time doing the things that make you smile and bring you joy. The job of any nurse can be demanding and draining; and without a system in place to guard your mental attitude, you can find your job satisfaction slipping.

One way that nurses can raise their spirits it through the way they dress. That's right. You have heard "dress for success". Well for a nurse, that means finding a uniform that is both comfortable and professional; but that also makes you feel good about yourself. A great way to dress up for work is to grab beaded lanyards from the store and wear those instead of something Plain-Jane. Beaded lanyards can hold your keys, ID badge and other items safely on your person and make a fashion statement all at once. For the nurse who works with children, beaded lanyards can be colorful and fun and can grab people's attention. Most of all, you will feel good when you add a little color to the way you look and the way you see joy in every day.

Nurses don't often receive recognition for the jobs that they perform day in and day out. However, they must constantly maintain a high level of care. Nurses realize how important their job is just by looking at their patients. Nurses see their patients as the individuals that they are, and the satisfaction they get from a job well done and the smile on the face of a patient is plenty of recognition. Nurses provide care with calm patience and a caring demeanor and receive good energy back from those they care for that the energy is what carries them through the rest of their day. This is repeated time and time again day after day; the great energy received back grateful patients will carry a nurse through an entire nursing career.

It has been said that one of the best ways to lift yourself up is to add value to another person. Nurses do this on a regular basis; to such an extent that it is easy to forget how important a job you perform. Remember to realize the value that you add to people's lives. The payoff is more than you could imagine!

7 Needed Work Skills in a Recovering Economy

By : Melissa Rubin

In today's world of multiple degrees, people have become extremely focused in one field. With a bachelor's degree in journalism and a master's in the relationship between the media and politics, your knowledge base gets so precise it's hard to broaden your job search. However, there are skills that have been highlighted during this time of a recession that can help people not only get, but keep, their jobs.

Despite the slow recovery of the economy, there are good jobs emerging for people who have the right attitude and the right qualifications. Even if your degree isn't in a job that sounds perfect for you, apply and highlight these 7 skills during the interview process.

Agility

As companies are starting to rebuild from firing whole departments of people during the recession, they are looking for people who can fill those vacant spots as well as people who could multi-task and have the ability to move to different positions. Some companies are also looking for more part-time and temporary positions; ones they can downsize without the drama and expense of a major layoff. This means that work will become less predictable and have more turnovers along with incorporating different disciplines into one position.

Those people who are able to adapt and become agile in the workplace in temporary positions turn out in the long run to be attractive potential full-time employees.

Skill Combos

Here's where the multiple degrees might hurt you; when you're totally focused on one section of one topic, you're limited as to what kinds of jobs are available to you. Highlighting two or three set skills during your interview and on your resume will pull you on top of the interviewee pile. A 2009 study by consulting firm McKinsey found that the highest earners with the best overall prospects have a combination of valuable skills. Keep in mind, the more you can bring to the table, the more reasons a company has to hire you.

Tacit Skills

Companies have developed a value system that highlights intangible qualities that are hard to put on a resume. These include things like informed intuition, judgment under pressure, ease with clients, problem-solving abilities, etc. These "tacit" skills tend to come with experience, but they also develop when people are actively trying to seek additional responsibility, volunteer for tough assignments, and are willing to take risks. Showing these types of skills and qualities to a potential employer is easy; make sure your list of references can attest to your tacit skill set and have specific examples of how those skills were used.

Broad Vision

You might be missing out on the perfect internship or career simply because you aren't looking for it! Most people are continuously looking in the field they have the most experience with, but with companies downsizing in many industries; you might be fighting a losing battle. Instead of focusing on the job or title you want, focus on your skills and explore whether you can apply them in a different field.

Analytics

Chances are that no matter what field you chose, there will be new data-gathering tools to help assess performance and identify opportunities available to employees. Being knowledgeable about your own performance gives you the opportunity to improve upon it!

Curiosity

Being curious about other fields of study or work can help open doors not readily available to you. If you have a background in print marketing but have an interest in learning more about online marketing, showing that curiosity and interest will show future employers that you are willing to research and learn new things on your own.

Self-reliance

Developing more technical skills instead of relying on others, making lots of backup plans, and building a big cushion in case something goes wrong are key skills to have for self-reliance. In a recovering economy corporate America is not as sound a concept as it was 10 years ago. Being open to change and knowing you have the ability to take whatever comes at you is an attractive asset to companies and employers.

Dealing With the Job Boredom

Bby : William King

You can tell if you bored of your job if you do not look forward to going to your workplace or you are not really keen to carry out your routine work? You might be relieved to know that you are not alone. In fact the majority of these 9 - 5 workers will confess to be having similar feelings associated with their job (which presents quite dreadful picture for the employers). Problem is that you cannot opt out of job that easily, because of the fear of staying jobless for a long period of time. Truth is that there are limited jobs in the market and you are already lucky to have one. In view of that, you are kind of forced to cling to your job, even if you feel like pulling your hairs, all the time. Your best bet is to try and deal effectively with the monotony and that is achievable, for sure.

Being humans, we are mostly looking for ease and comfort all the time. However, it is the same ease and leisure that eventually leads to this dullness. It's a known fact that we start getting bored when we have lots of free time on our hands; on the other hand a challenging job often keeps the occupants going. Therefore, the first thing you can do is to volunteer and take more responsibilities, who knows you will start getting some stipend for carrying out those extra tasks. Even if the remuneration is not there, you should start engaging in other responsibilities just for the sake of breaking the boring cycle. Talk to people from other departments; try to gain knowledge of new skills. Reach out to the new employees and guide them with their work, try to mingle more with the co-workers even if you are the introvert type.

You can get yourself some good books or songs (if your office policy allows you to). Getting some time out and listening to your favorite melodies for some time, or reading a novel in the spare time will make you look forward to go to your workplace every day. You can even listen to the songs or Pod casts during work if the work doesn't require lots of thinking or pondering all the time. At the end of the day, do not limit yourself to your professional life. Pursuing some hobby or indulging in some activity after working hours will make a positive impact on your mood at the workplace as well.

A Career As a Registered Nurse

By : Michael Morales

If you have had thoughts of entering the medical field to become a registered nurse you may soon become the annuitant of a job in such demand you could start work immediately once your nursing education requirements have been fulfilled.

Becoming a registered nurse will require a positive mind set, an altruistic concern for others, perseverance and patience. If all those expensive words don't frighten you, being a registered nurse might be your calling. If you plan to enter a nursing school remember not all schools are alike. Each may have a different set of admission requirements. Prerequisites may include SAT, ACT, certain GPA on subjects such as math, geometry, algebra, science, biology, chemistry and being able to speak English as well as another foreign language. It might behoove you to get these prerequisite courses behind you in a four year university then apply to a nursing school of your choice.

I have a tenant friend who is veteran RN and she always smiles at my officious questions about nursing especially the one about the time involved to become a registered nurse. It takes three years to get a nursing diploma, two years for a nursing associate's degree, four years for a BNN Bachelor's degree and two or three years to make the jump from an RN to BSN. Now you can see why the words patience and perseverance were included in the above paragraph.

If the field of nursing is your goal the tuition cost to complete a nursing program and receive the designation of an RN will depend on the RN school you attend. Is it going to be a public school or private? In your state or not? This is information you need to know. A local community college fee might run as high as $5,000 per year. On the other hand a private four year college could cost as much as $20,000 per year. However, as in most cases, there is plenty of private or government financial aid programs available. You can do your own research to answer this question by contacting the Nursing School Financial Aid Guide, Nursing Scholarships and Grants and FAFSA which is Free Application for Student Aid.

You have finished all of your schooling, been licensed and certified, purchased your new starched white uniform, pinned your RN nurse pendant over your left pocket and now you need a job. That's the easy part. The shortage of RN nurses is so egregious employers will be calling or texting you 24/7. Nationally the RN income low is $51,000, the average $69,000 and the high $87,000. If you chose a nursing specialty and became a certified nurse anesthetist your salary would be approximately $146,521 annually.

Seven Tips For Better Mid-Year Performance Reviews

By : Ramiro Roman

Last week I was asked by a marketing manager I'm mentoring how to conduct good mid-year review sessions. My advice to her was not to focus on the YTD metrics solely but to use these sessions as platforms to drive a broader and more strategic conversation. Think about it, the numbers are black and white... nothing can change them now... but if you focus on the strategy, you can significantly impact performance on the back half.

So in a list form, here are my top 7 recommendations for marketing managers attempting to assess their mid-year performance:

1. Is the strategy still valid? Who cares if you knocked out your metrics if the strategy is off. Reminds me of the old strategy matrix which shows that if you're executing very well on the wrong strategy you're just killing yourself faster. Don't underestimate this question.

2. What's happening in the market? Time to confirm the macro trends at this point in time. If you did your homework, these should not dramatically change... but there are always surprises.

3. How is the competitive landscape changing? Speaking from my current experience, the fragmentation of our markets has accelerated... it's difficult to see all the angles, particularly from new entrants... yet some of those are the most threatening in my view.

4. Is your value proposition still relevant and differentiated to your target audience?

5. How can you make your positioning more compelling? Don't think of product releases in a year to year format... look for adjacent opportunities all the time, particularly during mid-year after answering questions 1-4.

6. What was your opportunity cost? You'll never know the full answer, but if you think about where you spent most of your time and budget... with little result... what could you have employed instead. This is particularly difficult to assess with human capital. One way to look at this is to assess what internal efforts are draining your team. Some of this you cannot avoid... but much of it you can with a simple "no, we don't have the time to do that" - check yourself and ask your team.

7. Is this still the place you want to be for the foreseeable part of your life? In summary, life is too short... if you don't love where you work change the scope, projects or negotiate. This is a tough market, so use your judgment, but if you're not happy life is too short to keep living this way - find a better opportunity.

I'll be the first to admit, most of these are common sense... but common sense is not so common... try these points, it'll help you drive better discussions with your teams.

Benefits Which Fit Your Bill!

By : Challa S.S.J Ram Phani

Employees are always attracted with benefits. These benefits are very creative offered by companies and vary from company to company. Jack got attractive offer in another company and thinking of leaving the present organization. His friends advised him to stay back as the benefits are more and the future of the Company is promising. He analyzed and stayed back with the present company.

Calculating benefits: To complete projects in time, many organizations offer attractive benefits to employees to motivate them. Many companies offer benefits apart from cash rewards. Company products are sold to the employees with heavy discount. Transportation, Medical insurance, telephone bills, food coupons are such benefits offered to employees to retain and motivate them to perform. Some companies offer free movie tickets and also picnics to entertain employees. These are indirect benefits and not included in your salary. If you wish to leave a company, you have to think of all these benefits whether you receive the same kind of benefits in another company or lose.

Cash rewards: It was revealed in a study that companies offering cash rewards is a good decision, which helps retain employees. CEOs of 1400 companies said that cash rewards will stop employees from changing companies frequently. These cash rewards are offered after completing a project successfully and during festivals to retain employees. This will help employees to streamline their financial planning. The study revealed that employees like cash rewards. This will motivate them to perform better. Employees are attracted to other companies where these kinds of benefits are not offered.

Offering lunch: Some companies offer lunch to inculcate cordial relations among the employees. Even small companies are following this policy. To complete projects in time, employees have to spend extra hours in the office. Companies offer breakfast to meals to such employees to work extra hours. This will help to know the opinions of employees. This will inculcate team spirit and harmonious relations among employees.

Welcome with cash rewards: Employees welcomed with cash rewards along with salary work with enthusiasm. Some companies follow this policy. Instead of keeping employees wait for years for bonus, companies are offering bonus immediately while joining. This will help employees give their best. Sometimes, companies share profits also among the employees.
