Making the Workplace More Friendly

Recently I had a conversation with Catherine Haydn, MBA, a consultant in medical marketing who also has experience in retail. She gave me a list of ideas that make any workplace a more congenial environment. Whether you’re a receptionist in a small office or part of a large team, her hints can help make you stand out as a contributor to workplace harmony.

• Demonstrate responsibility for your own affairs — checking time card and pay stub at least weekly to insure
accuracy, keeping track of leave time, submitting expense reports, days off and vacation requests on time.

• Be punctual. Show up at the start of the day, for lunch breaks and for meetings. Being punctual means being
ready to work when the day begins (not just arriving, getting coffee, etc.)

• Take responsibility for staying informed. Do not depend on others to know what you do not know or have not
understood.

• Do not talk about the performance, behavior or the business of another employee. If speaking of another team
member, be positive. When there’s a real problem, bring negative concerns to your manager or, better yet, to
the person directly. If you need to vent, do it with someone outside of work.

• Support other people — sometimes by helping them directly.

• When experiencing conflict, look at yourself first. To what extent are you contributing to the problem? Then be
willing to discuss the problem with others and work for a solution.

• Do your share of “community jobs.” Keep the refrigerator or the microwave clean. Restock the coffee items.
Get the lunch order.

You can bet you’ll be noticed, and for the right things.
