Someone who needs occupational therapy requires help with day-to-day activities so they can function throughout life. Obviously, this will differ according to age. A first grade student will have different needs than an adult, who recently experienced a severe accident. The goal is to help these people function in life on a daily basis despite the disability, impairment, activity limitations, or participation restrictions. It doesn't take long to realize that there's a great need and why there are always occupational therapy jobs available in different settings around the country.
Some disabilities or disorders that occupational therapy jobs often come in contact with are cognitive disabilities, physical disabilities, mental illnesses, psychosocial disabilities, learning disorders, maladaptive behaviors, etc. It can effect a young child or a student. A therapist can even help an adult who is affected late in life because of an unexpected injury. Sometimes an unforeseen event occurs and a person is suddenly left with learning how to function. This is where a therapist comes in and helps provide intervention and assistance.
If an intervention is needed, then therapeutic aids and tools are used to help the patient overcome the difficulty. Sometimes a person needs help with adapting to an environment. Others need help processing a situation. Many therapists have to fabricate, create, apply, or train different training techniques to help these people learn how to function on their own. A therapist can't be afraid to think outside the box.
It's not easy to be a occupational therapist. A great deal of patience is required, as frustration will most likely be a daily norm. If providing someone hope amidst their storm is something you can't do, then you might want to look for a different occupation. Otherwise, there are always occupational therapy jobs available for those willing to help others.
