Earning extra money besides having a regular income is never a bad idea, and in these modern times, it is not uncommon to see people doing "side" activities besides holding a regular job.
The reasons for doing that are various; firstly, we live in a world of FEE based work, which is rapidly taking over the retro concept of SALARY based work. Secondly, given the temporary nature of most jobs these days, coupled with the fragile economic situation (the recent financial crisis for e.g.), it is never a bad idea to have an extra source of income, and lastly, given the rapid advance in IT and communication esp. in the last decade, one can easily find jobs over the internet and earn some cash.
Let's talk about the topic at hand, namely working from home. With the coming of internet (as previously mentioned) and esp. faster broadband connections, it is all the more attractive and lucrative to work for someone, sitting maybe, a whole continent away. Add to that, the online money transfer protocols (PayPal, Money Booker etc), it makes it even easier to get a job done and get paid instantly.
What are the kinds of jobs a freelancer can do from home? Well, MANY!
One can design WebPages for someone, write source code for developing software, help with tutoring of various subjects, provide assistance to individuals in areas like proof reading, translations, collecting data, doing online surveys, data entry, online advertising, project some group/company on social networking website etc.
Simply put, the areas where one can find work are boundless.
Another thing is that you don't have to be an "expert" or a "professional" to earn money sitting at home, (although being one can certainly increase the amount you earn). If you are, say, good at cooking, you can earn money by writing recipes for some online chef!
If you are good at accounting or finance, you can verify balance sheets for some small business, if you're an engineer, you can help a student with his assignments / research work, and the list goes on...
How much can one earn doing business at home depends on how much time one is willing to spend. You can easily make between $50 and even a grand monthly!
